Big Brown - 2008 Kentucky Derby Winner
From gate 20, Big Brown charged down the field to win the 134th Kentucky Derby on May 3, 2008. He was undefeated going into the Derby, is the 7th undefeated Derby Winner in history, and the 1st since 1929 to win from the 20 hole. He won by 4 3/4" lengths over Eight Belles, who came in 2nd.
Sadly, Big Browns thunderous win was overshadowed by the euthanization of Eight Belles, who fell just after crossing the finish line, breaking both of her front ankles. It was pure anguish to watch the fillie take 2nd place only to fall so soon after.
Jockey Kent Desormeaux achieved his 3rd Derby Win atop Big Brown - the 5th jockey to win the Derby 3 times, and trainer Rick Dutrow attained his first. Congrats to both!! Big Brown is Kentucky bred by IDEAH Stables and Paul Pompa Jr., and after only 4 starts and his 4th win, has cashed in over $2.1 million.
It was a great race, and with the expert manuvering by jockey Kent Desormeaux, a 20 hole start was turned into a great win - Way to go Kent & Big Brown!
